Remember: the fill bucket is your friend, burn and dodge are not so scary but are good and simple for shadings, and layers may be somewhat hard to manage, but make everything a whole lot easier when their power is harnessed.... the sad part is, that last sentence right there is better than most you will read in The Hobbit.
